Perfect for a cozy afternoon or a morning pick-me-up, learn the traditional method with a saucepan and cloth strainer, just like they do in Puerto Rico.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups water
- 2 heaping tablespoons of ground coffee (Café Bustelo or Café Rico recommended)
- 1 tablespoon sugar (optional)
- 1 cup whole milk
Equipment:
- A saucepan
- A cloth strainer or coffee strainer
- A stainless steel or glass pitcher (pre-rinsed with hot water)
- A cup for serving
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 6 minutes
Total Time: 11 minutes
Servings: 2 cups of Café Con Leche
Instructions:
1. In a saucepan, bring 2 cups of water to a boil.
2. Once the water is boiling, add two heaping tablespoons of ground coffee to the pan. Stir well to incorporate the coffee into the water.
3. Continue stirring the coffee during the boiling process until it starts to foam. Once foaming, reduce the heat to medium and let it simmer for approximately 3 minutes, stirring occasionally.
4. After simmering for 3 minutes, it's time to strain the coffee using your cloth strainer over a pitcher. Pour the coffee gently to avoid any splashing. Squeeze the cloth strainer lightly to extract the last few drops.
5. If adding sugar, mix one tablespoon of sugar with one teaspoon of the brewed coffee in a cup to form a paste. This will help the sugar dissolve easily when the coffee with milk is added.
6. Now, pour 1 cup of whole milk into another saucepan over medium heat. Stir constantly to prevent the formation of a film on top of the milk until you see small bubbles forming around the edges, indicating that the milk is scalded.
7. Gradually pour the entire amount of brewed coffee into the scalded milk. Continue to simmer for approximately 3 minutes, stirring occasionally.
8. Your Puerto Rican Café Con Leche is now ready to serve. Pour into your prepared cups and enjoy with traditional bread, such as Pandey agua or kansobao, if desired.
