Discover the enchanting world of Turkish coffee, a traditional beverage cherished for its rich aroma and distinctive foam layer. Prepared using ultra-fine ground coffee in a special pot called a cezve or ibrik, this beverage is a staple of Turkish hospitality and culture.

Ingredients

ā˜• 3 heaped teaspoons ultra-fine ground coffee (medium roasted)
šŸ’§ 3 Turkish coffee cups of room temperature water
šŸ¬ 3 teaspoons sugar (optional)

Instructions

1- Prepare Coffee Grounds:

  • Ensure you have ultra-fine ground coffee, akin to powder or flour.
  • If you're grinding the beans yourself, ensure they are finely powdered.

2- Measure Water:

  • For three servings, fill the cezve with three Turkish coffee cups of room temperature water.

3- Add Sugar:

  • Add three teaspoons of sugar to the pot; let the sugar sink naturally without stirring.

4- Add Coffee:

  • Add three heaped teaspoons of finely ground coffee to the pot.

5- Begin Heating:

  • Place the cezve on the stove over low heat.
  • Do not stir immediately.

6- Stir Slowly:

  • After allowing the mixture to heat for about one to two minutes, stir the coffee slowly.

7- Create Foam:

  • Continue to heat until a thick ring of foam (crema) forms at the top.
  • Ensure the coffee does not overflow once it begins to boil.

8- Distribute Foam:

  • Remove the pot from the heat.
  • Spoon a little of the foam into each Turkish coffee cup.

9- Reheat for Second Froth:

  • Return the pot to the stove briefly to create a second froth.

10- Final Frothing:

  • Once the coffee froths up a second time, remove it from the heat.

11- Serve:

  • Pour the coffee slowly into the prepared cups, ensuring the crema's texture in the cups is maintained.

Prep Time: Approximately 5 minutes
Cook Time: 5-7 minutes
Total Time: 10-12 minutes
Servings: 3 servings
Equipment: Cezve (preferably hammered copper with ornate handle), Stainless steel gas stove (digital clock shown saying "23:54"), Turkish coffee cups (small, with vertical sides), Spoon (for stirring and spooning foam)

Cooking Tips

  • Ensure the coffee is ultra-fine ground for the correct texture.
  • Let sugar sink to caramelize slightly as it heats, for enhanced flavor.
  • Use low heat and stir only after a minute or two of heating.
  • Good quality Turkish coffee is judged by the amount of foam; spooning foam into cups first is key.
  • Pouring slowly helps retain the crema's texture.
